About Me

Gigi Polo is a Dominican artist, designer, filmmaker, researcher, and educator; her interdisciplinary practice brings together art and design, pedagogy, and research.

She directed, produced, and edited Madly Gifted (released in 2013)—a documentary that explores the relationship between bipolar disorder and artistic temperament—available as open-source material on Vimeo and at madlygifted.com. As research and practice blended, Gigi’s investment in mental health and social justice activism led her to start a still ongoing, personal project: an ethnographic investigation of self-and social identities within mixed-race women and apartheid communities, which then translated into a series of portraits that contest social prejudice, stereotypes, and otherness. In 2021, Gigi became the Design Director at Dauphin Americas, a German furniture manufacturer, where she manages the Design Services and Marketing departments; in this new position, Gigi leverages her design expertise and research capacities to service clients’ needs, and build partnerships that support industry efforts in sustainability and workplace wellbeing.
