e-NABLE Community workshop II

Skills, Competencies, Behaviors + Visual Semiotics
English for Specific Purposes

This is a curriculum, and series of lesson plans (stages 1-4), for a community of makers, called e-NABLE, who design and produce 3D printed prosthetics, share their designs openly on the web (open-source community) and give away the prosthetics for testing and use. In this series of workshops, I will work with community members and other stakeholders to co-create a visual language (ESP) for digital badges, which are used to validate participants’ competencies, skills, and level of expertise. Participants in these workshops come from a variety of backgrounds and age groups, from 15-60+ years old, both amateurs and experts in designing and producing functional 3D prints; since most of them are not designers but rather follow a DIY methodology, the workshops introduce the visual language needed for them to design badges for their community, as they are the experts in the types of skills and competencies that need recognition and validation within their practices. The curriculum I developed will serve as support material for our application to be recognized as part of the United Nations organizations network that works towards meeting the UN 2030 SUSTAINABLE GOALS, goal 4 specifically, of equal education; it will also be included in our UN grant application.
