Assessing Reading Lesson Plan

This is a 3-hour lesson plan to assess students’ understanding of a design theory called Critical Design. In this artifact, I concentrated on defining the micro and macro skills that students will practice, and the ways in which I will conduct (and document) formative and summative assessment at different points of the lesson; I designed a holistic rubric to use as self and peer-to-peer assessment. I did a pilot test this Fall 18, in collaboration with my co-teacher in the Seminar portion of the course; when doing debrief, students voiced the value of the exercise in helping the learn reading strategies and be able to learn new vocabulary and grasp the core ideas in this theory. I am planning to continue using this exercise in this course and have also adapted it to a new class I am teaching next Spring 19 at Parsons, called Mental Health by Design, an elective course that will bring together native and non-native English speakers.
